Can military veterans get a DD Form 214 discharge upgrade or correction for other than honorable conditions? if mental health conditions including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury have been diagnosed after a veteran’s departure from military service, veterans can appeal their discharge status.
Discharge upgrades can also be given for those who had sexual assault or harassment during military service. Another possible upgrade is given for veterans who were discharged for sexual orientation known as the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
“f your application goes through, and your discharge is upgraded, you’ll be eligible for the VA benefits you earned during your period of service,” retired Army Command Sergeant Major E.G.Mais, the VFW Post 8541 services officer said.
This can include benefits such as disability ratings, education and home loans, he added.
Mais adds VFW, American Legion and other organizations can help you find the online application to begin the appeal process.
Veterans who want help in this issue can go to this link for more information: https://www.va.gov/discharge-upgrade-instructions/. The VA website allows veterans to give detailed issues through a survey that helps them begin the process to dispute their veterans rating.
