Workforce Solutions Alamo offers childcare services to families entering workforce

It is sometimes said that parenting is a full-time job. Unfortunately, taking care of young children can often conflict with the job hunt for those who are unable to find affordable childcare for their families.

Fortunately, Workforce Solutions Alamo can help.

Workforce Solutions Alamo (WSA) serves as the regional workforce system’s governing board, representing the thirteen counties that make up the San Antonio area. This network of service providers and contractors seeks to grow San Antonio by bringing people and jobs together.

WSA offers a wide range of services to job seekers, including those who are leaving the military. However, one service stands out in particular: childcare.

Here are some useful things to know:

How do I know if I am eligible?

There are several factors that will determine whether you are eligible for the childcare program.

First, WSA Child Care Services is available to eligible families living in the Alamo Region. This area includes the counties Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Karnes, McCullen, Medina, and Wilson.

To be eligible, the child must be either a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant and live in the same household as the parent. Although the program is primarily available to children under 13, it can also be extended to those under 19 if they have a disability.

Meanwhile, the applicant must be engaged in training or in school for a set number of hours each week. For single parents this is 25 hours per week. For married couples, both parents must be either working or training for a combined 50 hours.

Finally, WSA must consider the household’s average income. You can find more information on their website.

Where do I apply?

Eligible families are requested to complete an online application.

If funding is unavailable, applicants will be put on a waitlist and be required to update their information every three months (90 days). Once enough funding is available, WSA will contact eligible families for next steps.

How do I find a provider?

To help parents find suitable child care facilities, WSA offers a map of available facilities.

Parents can choose from a selection of Registered and Licensed Child Care Homes or Licensed Child Care Centers. These facilities must meet certain standards and requirements in order to be eligible.

Alternatively, parents can opt for Relative Child Care. To be eligible the individual must be the child’s grandparent, uncle or aunt, or a sibling who is over eighteen. Additionally, they must reside in the same household as the child.
