Transferring your professional license to a new state? There’s a DoD program for spouses to offset costs.

Military spouses who are moving from another state to a new one can usually get their professional licensing transfer fees waived.

The U.S. Department of Labor Veterans Employment and Training Services program has a well-established program that helps not only ease the transfer of those licenses but for many cases, pay any transfer fees.

The Department of the Air Force Spouse Licensure Reimbursement Program requires all states to recognize the professional licenses of spouses who relocate to another state on military orders, except for legal practice licenses (due to specific procedures and requirements),” notes 2nd Lt. Emma McHenry, a public affairs officer with Joint Base San Antonio.  “At Joint Base San Antonio, Texas (we) recognizes a military spouse’s out-of-state license and waives fees for the duration of their military member’s assignment, but for no more than three years.”

Army, Marine and Navy spouses have similar programs available to them.

Lieutenant McHenry suggests spouses visit this website to get specific information for their career transfers.

She also suggests that spouses visit this Military OneSource website for further information. Mililitary spouses who are nurses can transfer their professional licenses when their  husband or wives get orders to a new base.
