Some Texas toll roads are free for vets with DV plates

By Matt Scherer

Texas veterans with disabled vets’ plates can drive on some Texas tollroads without paying the fees for many roads in Houston, Austin and Dallas.

Retired Navy Chief Mike Blankers said he discovered this hidden perk several years ago.  As a MilTRAC board of director, he shared this info with our editorial team so that disabled veterans can save money.

The TX Tag website gives a clear map of the roads where veterans with the “DV” plate can drive without having money deducted from their bank account. According to the state’s customer service team, some private roads will still charge for driving on their roads.

Still, for anyone driving through Austin on I-35 will be glad they now have a quicker and safer alternative, especially when driving between Killeen and San Antonio.

Further research showed that Illinois has a similar program. Veterans from the Land of Lincoln can find info at this link.
