Veterans who want to return to Texas should know that the Texas Veterans Commission will host job fairs around the Veterans Day holiday. The first job fair begins Nov. 1 and the last one is set for Nov. 14.
From Brownsville to the south, El Paso to the west and Amarillo to the north, the commission has a job fair located with most of the state.
Veterans can go to this link to find their community. MILTrac has also published in its calendar job fairs that are located close to communities such as Fort Cavazos, San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
Here’s some advice for veterans who want to attend a job fair.
First, do a little job reconnaissance and find out the names of the hiring organizations who will participate in these events.
The next thing is to do some research on the company, especially with LinkedIn. If a company has an HR rep who resides in the community, it’s good to reach out to them ahead of time.
Next, dress professionally for the job fair. Business attire should be worn. Most job interview experts will tell someone that it’s better to be overdressed than show up in a pair of shorts and flip flops.
Finally, bring a notebook to record info on every meeting and follow up with an email or LinkedIn message.
(Note: new to LinkedIn? MILTrac offers a free copy of “LinkedIn For Military” for those who fill out the form on our front page.)
