Military bases have changed the base access rules for those without the DoD ID card.. Veterans and their caregivers can now use a REAL ID card to prove their status. Security forces advise those without the military retiree card to visit the military visitor center to enroll themselves in the program, especially if they are a veteran or a care giver.
When our MILTrac team visited Fort Sam Houston, the young airman at the gate, said those without the retiree card should visit his visitor’s center to update their info with his organization.. He added that proof of insurance and a vehicle registration paperwork are needed to complete the process.
REAL ID cards are also a requirement for those flying in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security will require travelers to use the ID by May 7, 2025.
