VA expands educational benefits for some veterans

3(Washington, D.C.)The Department of Veterans Affairs announced that — following the 2024 Supreme Court decision — it has updated the process for awarding GI Bill benefits. This change means that many Veterans who served multiple periods of military service (for example, Veterans who reenlisted) will be eligible for up to an additional 12 months of education benefits.

Under the previous policy, eligible Veterans who served at least two periods of service were limited to a maximum total of 36 months of GI Bill benefits, between the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Under the updated policy, that limitation is removed — meaning that eligible Veterans can now qualify for up to 48 months of total GI Bill benefits.

“the expansion is limited to those who had 2 periods of active duty, one making them Montgomery GI Bill eligible and a second that qualified them for the Post-9/11 GI Bill,” Jane Babcock, a veteran service officer and a MILTrac contributor noted in a recent post.

“Veterans with families eligible for these VA benefits should know their college military liaison office will add the additional time to their children or for t he veteran,” said Joe Iglesias, community liaison for the San Antonio Coalition For Veterans and Families.  “For those considering their college options, it’s important to reach out to the VA to apply for this benefit.  (Note:  more info is available on the VA web page listed below.
