VA Login Changes

Veterans accessing online services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will soon need a Login.Gov or ID.Me account. This new requirement includes the following:

  • VA.Gov
  • MyHealthVet
  • VA Health and Benefits App

This policy will go into effect on January 31st.

Why the Change?

Enhanced security

The VA aims to crack down on identity thefts and social engineering scams that are targeting veterans. According to data from the FTC, veterans are 80% more likely to face identity theft than the general population.

Once personal data like social security numbers get leaked, it becomes very difficult to contain it. Therefore, the VA has been considering options to keep this information secure.

Improved efficiency

Veterans have voiced concerns about juggling multiple accounts and passwords for various VA services. With this new approach, a single account will grant access to online VA services. This eliminates the need to maintain separate logins, streamlining the user experience

What does this mean for veterans?

Starting January 31st, veterans must use either a Login.Gov or ID.Me account to log in to VA platforms. If you don’t set up an account by the deadline, you will not lose your information. However, you won’t be able to log in to online resources until an account is created.Veterans can still access VA services through phone, mail, or in-person visits if they don’t have an online account.
