Palo Alto College and San Antonio based Army recruiters are working together to help south Texas residents overcome educational obstacles to enlist in the military.
Joe Bray, the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, has been working with recruiters and Palo Alto to help interested recruits obtain their GED and also improve their Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score in an effort to help them qualify for military service.
Bray said this collaboration between Palo Alto College and the Army signifies a landmark effort in educational access and military readiness, promising to set new standards for career preparation in the community.
“We are proud to launch this groundbreaking GED partnership with the U.S. Army, setting an example for institutions nationwide in supporting military students and families,” said Dr. Robert Garcia, the president of Palo Alto College, in a new release. “This initiative not only opens doors to military service but also empowers our community with vital educational opportunities. It’s an honor to lead by example in this crucial endeavor.”
Prospective students must have completed a 9th grade education, reside in Texas and be 18 years of age.
Palo Alto will offer a “spring flex” class that begins March 25 and ends May 15. Classes will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. – noon. or from 6 – 9 p.m. A second program is set for June 3 to July 24.
