Selling leave before retirement? Consider your options

Mark Overberg, one of the folks we love to follow on LinkedIn, provided an interesting insight into the benefit of selling leave before retirement as compared to taking leave upon retirement or separation.

“IF you SELL your terminal leave, your payout will be calculated based on your base pay ONLY and then it will be taxed, perhaps boosting you into the next higher marginal tax bracket,” Overberg noted in a recent post.

He added: “IF you TAKE your terminal leave, you’ll receive your BAQ, BAS, and all of your other normal monthly payments – a much larger payout. AND you can work at your new non-DOD job, if necessary, while you’re on terminal leave.”
