Remembering retired Sergeant Major Bob Masten and others on Memorial Day

Every year, retired Sergeant Major Bob Masten led an effort with his American Legion post to compile the names of veterans who were buried at Fort Sam Houston’s cemetery.

Masten and others would read off the names of hundreds of veterans who were interred at the federal burial site. Taking the data from the national cemetery’s database, Masten would put together a book of names for the “Reading of the Names.”  He and other members would take the podium to read off the veteran’s name and their branch of service.

Masten, a former Legion district and post commander, died a month ago. His post will continue his legacy with l their “Reading of the Names” May 24 at 8 a.m.

The post wants to invite other Legion members and veterans to join them for this emotional event.  “If you are able to participate, please prepare for hot and humid weather with water, sunscreen, and a comfortable lawn chair if you do not intend on utilizing the installed bench seats,” said Burt Quintanilla, the  post commander.

To honor Masten, his family will begin the ceremony wit his name.
