(Editor’s note) Visit most military job fairs, and there are at least two to three colleges trying to enroll veterans into their programs.
YETTTTT!!!! The MILTrac content team rarely see trade school or workforce training programs setting up their booths.
That’s why when Tyrone Hewitt, a frequent contributor to our website, posted this article about trade schools, we wanted to share it with our readers. For military veterans and their families leaving active duty, there are some significant alternatives.

I’m a HUGE fan of the Trades, and love talking to transitioning service members, veterans and spouses about them!
Why?
1️⃣ Trades often provide a QUICK path to employment.
✅ Many trades require 2 or less years of training (apprenticeship, certificate, or associate degree).
✅ You can start earning while training!
2️⃣ Low (or FREE) Education Costs
✅ Trade schools and apprenticeships cost a fraction of a 4-year degree.
✅ Many programs are covered by the GI Bill, grants, or employer sponsorships.
✅ Less debt means you start working with financial freedom.
3️⃣ STRONG Job Security
✅ Trades are ALWAYS in demand — people will always need electricity, plumbing, HVAC, vehicles repaired, etc.
✅ Look around….many industries are facing worker shortages, which means MORE opportunities.
✅ Trade skills are needed EVERYWHERE — from small towns to big cities.
✅ Aaaaaaaand – potentially easier to relocate without worrying about finding work.
4️⃣ High Earning Potential & Entrepreneurship
✅ Believe it or not….skilled trades often pay equal or higher than many bachelor’s degree jobs.
✅ There’s also the opportunity to start your own businesses (contractor, repair service, consulting). *hint* Check out Boots to Business!
5️⃣ Hands-On | Practical Work
✅ Great for people who prefer active, problem-solving jobs rather than desk work.
( hear this A LOT from clients)
I’ve had all paygrades go into trades…E4s, and even going up to O4s!!!
