How veterans can obtain a VHIC ID card

Here are the main ways a veteran can get a VHIC card:

1. Apply Online

  • Go to the VA’s website at https://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhic
  • Sign in using your Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, or My HealtheVet account
  • Complete the online application form
  • Upload a recent photo (if required)
  • The card will be mailed to you within 7-10 business days

2. Apply in Person

  • Visit your local VA medical center or clinic
  • Go to the enrollment or registration office
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license)
  • They’ll take your photo and process your application on the spot
  • You may receive the card immediately or have it mailed to you

3. Apply by Phone

  • Call your local VA medical facility
  • Ask to speak with the enrollment coordinator or VHIC office
  • They can help you start the application process

Requirements:

  • You must already be enrolled in VA healthcare (if you’re not enrolled yet, you’ll need to apply for VA healthcare benefits first)
  • You’ll need to provide identification and possibly a recent photo

Cost: The VHIC card is free for enrolled veterans.

If you need to replace a lost or damaged card, you can use the same methods to request a new one.
