Here are the main ways a veteran can get a VHIC card:
1. Apply Online
- Go to the VA’s website at https://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhic
- Sign in using your Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, or My HealtheVet account
- Complete the online application form
- Upload a recent photo (if required)
- The card will be mailed to you within 7-10 business days
2. Apply in Person
- Visit your local VA medical center or clinic
- Go to the enrollment or registration office
- Bring a government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license)
- They’ll take your photo and process your application on the spot
- You may receive the card immediately or have it mailed to you
3. Apply by Phone
- Call your local VA medical facility
- Ask to speak with the enrollment coordinator or VHIC office
- They can help you start the application process
Requirements:
- You must already be enrolled in VA healthcare (if you’re not enrolled yet, you’ll need to apply for VA healthcare benefits first)
- You’ll need to provide identification and possibly a recent photo
Cost: The VHIC card is free for enrolled veterans.
If you need to replace a lost or damaged card, you can use the same methods to request a new one.
